Astrocytes originated from neural stem cells drive the regenerative remodeling of pathologic CSPGs in spinal cord injury
Karimi-Abdolrezaee and colleagues demonstrate that astrocytes derived from resident or transplanted NPCs are permissive for SCI repair. These astrocytes show anti-inflammatory phenotype and recondition the extracellular matrix. Their novel findings show that NPC-derived astrocytes possess the molecular machinery to remove inhibitory CSPGs from SCI lesion through receptor-mediated endocytosis and degrade CSPGs intracellularly and extracellularly by the production of ADAMTS1/9 enzymes.
