Functionally redundant roles of ID family proteins in spermatogonial stem cells

In this study, Hobbs and colleagues uncover compensatory roles for ID family transcriptional regulators in spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs). Analysis of a knockin reporter strain demonstrated Id4 expression in SSC populations and meiotic germ cells. Id4 deletion was tolerated by SSCs but caused meiotic cell depletion. ID4 loss triggered ID3 upregulation in spermatogonia, and combined ID inhibition disrupted the SSC state.
