Buddhists Throw Stones at Church as Christians Pray Inside

With nearly 20 Christians gathered inside for prayer, Buddhists threw stones at Zion Church on May 21 in Southern Sri Lanka.

According to local sources, at around 8 p.m., during prayers, a loud noise was suddenly heard on the roof. The congregation soon realized that stones were being deliberately thrown at the church building. The asbestos-sheet roof was damaged during the attack. After prolonged stone pelting, the attackers fled the premises.

The members of the congregation were terrified as they heard the loud sound of stones breaking through their asbestos sheet roof. Though they continue to gather for worship and prayer meetings, they remain concerned about their safety.

Saddened by the attack, the church’s pastor shared that the damaged roof had been built with the sacrificial labor and savings of his church’s poor members.

The police responded quickly to the attack. Authorities also assured the congregation that officers would regularly visit the church during prayer gatherings to provide security.

The church was established in 2022 and has been legally registered with the Sri Lankan government. Christians in Sri Lanka, especially those in unregistered churches, often face hostility and intimidation because of their faith.
